The name Gallissoniensis that accompanies one of the best-known cultivars of the Magnolia grandiflora is not accidental: it is a tribute to a fundamental historical figure for French botany.
The name in fact derives from Baron de la Gallissonnière, an 18th-century botanist and naturalist, who first selected and described this particular variety. It was thanks to his studies, his passion for the acclimatization of exotic species and the observation work carried out in French gardens that the Magnolia grandiflora took on a recognizable and distinct form, consolidating the notoriety of this cultivar in the European panorama.
🔍 IN-DEPTH BOX — Who was Baron de la Gallissonnière?
Roland-Michel Barrin, Marquis de la Galissonière (1693–1756) was:
🌱 Passionate botanist: he promoted the study and introduction of new plant species in France.
📚 Cultivar selector: his meticulous work led to the definition of the Magnolia grandiflora “Gallissoniensis”.
🌍 Governor of New France: a role that allowed him to come into contact with many North American species, including magnolias.
The choice to dedicate this cultivar to him is therefore not a simple symbolic act, but the recognition of a real contribution to the development of European ornamental botany.
Gallissoniensis is today one of the most appreciated magnolias for its glossy foliage, resistance and spectacular flowering: characteristics which, combined with its formal balance, have made it a reference in parks, historic gardens and contemporary landscape projects.
