It belongs to the Magnoliaceae family, a very important genus for gardening, because it includes all species of ornamental importance, both for their foliage and for their flowering. The geographical area of origin is North America. Nurseries mainly grow the “Gallissoniensis” variety, which has elongated, oval leaves, a glossy dark green color on the upper side and rusty brown on the lower side.
The flowers are large, with fleshy petals, pure white in color and very fragrant, so much so that they are used in cosmetics and perfumery. Flowering lasts from May/June to September.

It prefers temperate climates, in areas protected from strong winds. It requires permeable soil, preferably acidic. The varieties are propagated by grafting onto the seed type, and the grafting is done in spring, although recently, propagation by cuttings has also been used; this method, in fact, drastically reduces the time it takes to obtain a seedling ready for planting in the nursery.
